Scaling Nature-based Solutions in the Mekong: Workshop Synthesis Report

This synthesis report shares key themes from workshop, including defining “scaling” within the context of nature-based solutions (NbS) and who NbS are being designed by and for; How we can move from project subsidised to sustainable nature-based solutions; Policy and governance barriers and enablers; and Gender equality, disability and social inclusion.

Summary messages include:

  • The concept of “scale” within NbS is complex.

  • It is crucial to reflect on positionality.

  • There is a lack of technical guidance and standards adapted to the region.

  • There is an urgent need to transition towards sustainable and self-reliant financing models.

  • Blended finance mechanisms, including concessional capital, risk guarantees, grants, technical assistance funds and outcome-based financing, can help overcome the financing gap and de-risk investments in NbS.

  • There remains significant gaps with Gender Equity, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) goals.
